VANCOUVER - With funding from the Shell Environmental Fund (SEF), Canadians from Vancouver Island to Newfoundland continue to take personal action in support of the environment. "Quest Outreach Society has received $5,000 from the SEF for our "Waste Not, Want not Campaign" according to Shelley Wells, Executive Director.
The goal of Campaign "Waste Not", Want Not" is to increase the public's awareness - private, public and not-for profit sectors - of the ecological and social benefits of Quest's Food Rescue and Redistribution Model.
Quest Outreach Society's mandate is to rescue food from being sent to the landfills and redistribute it to those in need. In its 2003/2004 fiscal year, Quest's major accomplishments included:
- providing food services to over 480,000 people through its partnership with 80 Lower Mainland social service agency programs;
- rescuing and re-distributed 2,836 tonnes of food (valued at $6.25 million) with the help of 162 food suppliers, and;
- reducing GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions associated with consumable food waste by 2,200 metric tonnes carbon dioxide equivalent/year.
Created in 1990, the Shell Environmental Fund is a national program intended to make a local difference. A total of $11,489,803.32 has been granted to 3,903 environmental projects across the country. These projects included habitat restoration, beach and road clean-ups, waste reduction and recycling programs, trail-building, educational initiatives, and other innovative environmental projects.
Individuals, schools, community associations, service clubs and environmental groups have used the grants, of up to $5,000 per project, to improve and protect their environment.
The Shell Environmental Fund accepts applications for projects that are action-oriented, innovative, and community-based. Representatives of three environmental organizations and one Shell employee make the funding decisions.
