Campaign – “Rescuing Food, Reducing hunger”

We don’t have a hunger problem, we have a food distribution problem.

Every day 17% of people in B.C. experience food insecurity, and nearly 25% of children do not have regular access to nutritious affordable food. Yet millions of tonnes of perfectly good food goes to the landfill every year in BC. That's where Quest Food Exchange comes in. Over the last 16 years, we've provided food to thousands of food-insecure people, diverted thousands of tonnes of food waste away from the landfill and provided the opportunity for thousands of people to build skills, gain work experience and re-enter the labour market. Sadly, we're only rescuing one per cent of the food waste available to us, leaving, 99 per cent to clog up the landfills and emit harmful green house gases, while thousands of British Columbians are still in need.

Quest Food Exchange has developed a unique, self-sustaining model of food rescue and redistribution that fulfils a vital role in Vancouver’s food production and distribution cycle and addresses social, environmental and economic issues. We have established a wide network of partners, suppliers and supporters and are now poised to expand operations across B.C. Our goal in the next five years is to establish a core network of central hubs and satellite distribution centres across the Lower Mainland, Vancouver Island and the Interior, which will enable Quest to increase its food recovery efforts by 600 per cent (i.e., recover ~$50 million worth of food) and provide food assistance to more than 300,000 people a month!

In this, our first capital campaign, Quest’s target of $5 million is crucial to ensuring that B.C.’s community is served for years to come. With $1 million already secured from winning the Vancity Million Dollar Award – the biggest award in Canada – we are already well on our way to creating this lasting legacy. Quest is in a unique position to build on its existing strengths to meet the growing demand for food for at-risk populations while continuing to reduce the negative impact of food waste on the environment.

Quest’s Vision & Project Timeline

From Waste to Resources

Quest is taking a major role in reducing the negative impact of food waste on the environment by offering an ecologically sound and socially responsible solution of redistributing excess food supply for human consumption. The result: less waste, a reduced impact on the environment while fulfilling the basic need for food for our less fortunate citizens.

Although community demand for Quest’s services is increasing, our ability to increase capacity (i.e., collect and redistribute more food) is limited by our infrastructure. Our campaign “Rescuing Food – Reducing Hunger” is aimed at increasing Quest’s capacity through the acquisition of a network of central hubs and satellite distribution centres across B.C. A comprehensive business plan detailing Quest’s expansion has already been completed and is ready to be executed.
