REDUCING WASTE

By rescuing food, Quest isn't just feeding people; we're reducing waste and helping to protect the environment, too.

Many of you are already aware of alarming changes in our environment caused by global warming. You might also know that emissions from cars are a major source of greenhouse gas. But did you know that the food waste we dump into our landfills also contributes significantly to global warming? The methane gas produced by decomposing food scraps in Canada's landfills contributes 56,945 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent to global warming.

Quest has provided us with a
unique opportunity to support a project with both environmental and social benefits. Some of these include diverting food waste from landfills, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, delivery of compost-related outreach and education, engagement of volunteers, and media coverage..

At Quest we're taking our food rescue one step further with the Zero Waste Project — we're committed to finding a use for every scrap of food as well as the packaging it comes in.

The Zero Waste Project is a partnership between Quest and Eco-Action Canada that aims to reduce all food waste to zero while helping to educate the public about the benefits of a zero-waste, closed-loop waste management system. Zero Waste turns spoiled and expired food into compost and animal feed, and diverts all non-organic materials (such as food packaging) to services throughout the community who might have better use for certain items or are equipped with programs that can safely process them. This saves our landfills and reduces harmful greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions at the same time.
